Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge, MA RESEARCH SCIENTIST/NANOMATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION SPECIALIST, Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research-Nanotechnology Materials Core Facility (Nano Core), to fill a leadership position in a newly-established facility housing state-of-the-art equipment for a wide array of materials science capabilities, including cryo-transmission and scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, phase-modulated FTIR, ICP mass spectrometry, analytical centrifugation, and more. Will be responsible for the overall operation of the Nano Core, including instrument maintenance; user consultation, training, and supervision; record maintenance; ensuring compliance with MIT EHS and OSHA safety policies and Koch and MIT operational policies; and working with administrative and scientific teams on matters of operation and scientific direction. Will play a key role in the development and gradual expansion of this core and support the research conducted at Koch and MIT by assisting researchers in finding appropriate instruments, optimal conditions for instrument operation, and data interpretation and analysis.

REQUIREMENTS: a Ph.D. in a relevant field, e.g., materials science, chemical engineering, or chemistry; demonstrated passion for the use of the technologies offered in the core as tools for solving problems in modern materials research; a strong background in particle characterization, cryo-imaging, and high resolution electron microscopy of materials systems (preferably in polymeric and organic materials systems); dedication to the support and instruction of students and other researchers; exceptional organizational, troubleshooting, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; and fluency in written and spoken English for technical discussion and user training. Familiarity with spectroscopy, thermal analysis tools, and AFM desirable. A self-starter with supervisory experience as an academic or industrial lab manager is strongly preferred.
