The University of Southampton is home to the Zepler Insititute – a multidisciplinary research centre and the largest photonics and electronics institute in UK, comprising a £120M cleanroom complex that supports high-quality research in photonics, nanotechnologies and quantum technologies. To enhance these facilities even further and allow UK researchers to carry out a world-class research, the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has awarded a £3.3 million grant to Southampton entitled CORNERSTONE (Capability for OptoelectRoNics, MEtamateRialS, NanoTechnOlogy aNd SEnsing) to establish a Silicon Photonics Capability within the UK, involving the Universities of Southampton, Glasgow and Surrey. Within this project, a deep UV stepper and associated cleanroom equipment will be installed at the University of Southampton cleanroom complex.

We are looking for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher/process engineer to work on the CORNERSTONE project and to support the operation of the Silicon Photonics Capability. You should have a very good knowledge of semiconductor processing technology and equipment. A background in photonics, electronics or material science is essential. Experience and a good track record in optoelectronic device fabrication and working in a cleanroom environment is required, in particular, an in-depth knowledge of plasma processing. Knowledge of silicon-based and CMOS processing standards will be highly advantageous. Additional advantages will be, experience in designing photonic or electronic components and circuits, as well as the experience with design of experiments for process optimization. The ability to multitask and work as part of a highly interactive research team, comprising members from other universities across the UK, is essential.

The initial appointment will be for up to 4 years, from December 2014 or shortly thereafter. Potential applicants are welcome to contact Professor Graham T. Reed for additional information (g.reed@soton.ac.uk).
