Expand the research capabilities of the Mudrocks Systems Research Laboratory (MSRL) and State Lands (STARR) programs by adding expertise in CT and SEM imaging of nano-scale pores in unconventional mudrock, sandstone, and carbonate hydrocarbon reservoirs systems and their relationship to porosity and permeability.


Essential Functions

Carry out research on shale porosity systems using SEM, FIBSEM, HEISEM, and CT scanning instrumentation. Present research results in oral and poster formats at local and national meetings. Serve on internal committees as necessary. Interact with university researchers and staff to assist in planning and developing research programs. Develop new programs and funding. Collaborate effectively with members of research teams to integrate research with that of others on the team. Publish reports in peer-reviewed journals. Work as part of an integrated team of researchers and technical staff. Develop new funding to support existing research and develop new research.


Marginal/Incidental functions

Other related functions as assigned. Occasional weekend, overtime and evening work to meet deadlines. Occasional interstate, intrastate and international travel. Field work as necessary.

Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.


Required qualifications

PhD in geosciences, engineering, or related field. Proven ability to conduct independent research. Record of publication commensurate with experience. Demonstrated ability to lead a team of researchers as well as work effectively within such a team. Expertise in measuring and interpreting data obtained from SEM, FIBSEM, HEISEM microscopy, CT scanning, and porosity and permability analysis. Willingness to carry out integrated research in a team enviroment.


Preferred Qualifications

Record of attracting funding to support his or her own research. Demonstrated ability to design, set up, and manage a laboratory capable of measuring porosity and permability in sedimentary rock samples. Professional demeanor. Excellent communication skills.
