This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Department of Oncology. The Research Associate will be responsible for the organic chemistry laboratory under the direction of Dr. Ralf Shirrmacher. The major duties of the position will include:

  • Leading the laboratory's research program on nano particle projects, aimed at establishing a gold nano particle platform for the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics for cancer treatment
  • Planning research activities and providing research design; determining appropriate methodology in carrying out identified research goals
  • Responsible for the radioactive labelling of all diagnostic, as well as therapeutic imaging agents, originating from the nano particle platform
  • Responsible for guiding and coaching a team that will include post-doctoral fellows, PhD students, graduate and undergraduate students
  • Preparing grant applications and writing and submitting manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Presenting and defending the group's research at scientific conferences and participating in meetings and seminars

The successful candidate for this position will hold a PhD education in organic chemistry or radiochemistry with post-doctoral experience. The skill set should include:

  • Superior skills in preparative organic chemistry, nano particle preparation and analytical chemistry to verify the composition of all synthesized materials
  • Experience in the procedures of organic synthesis, purification (HPLC, chromatography,crystallisation) and structure validation using NMR, mass spectrometry, XPS, TEM STM and Raman spectroscopy
  • Experience with radioactive labeling of small molecules (ie receptor ligands) as well as compounds of high molecular weight ( ie peptides and proteins)
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, presentation, leadership and management skills; evidence of ability to effectively work on a project team with employees at all levels

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has an approximate end date of June 30, 2016 and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca and annual salary range of $55,035 - $75,687. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
