The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH is a Helmholtz Research Center of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal State of Berlin with about 1100 employees. Places of location are Berlin-Wannsee and Berlin-Adlershof. Focusses of the research are structure research with neutron and synchrotron scattering as well as solar energy research in the field of thin film solar cells. (www.helmholtz-berlin.de)

The Scientific Division Large Scale Facilities is seeking for the Institute SRF – Science and Technology a

Postdoctoral Scientist (f/m) for Superconducting RF Cavity Development

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH (HZB) operates one of the world’s most advanced Synchrotron Light Sources (BESSY II) in the VUV to soft x-ray range. With its accelerator staff of about 100 employees, HZB strives to continuously improve its existing accelerators, and to develop novel concepts for future applications.

With these goals in mind, HZB has secured funding for the BERLinPro project, a 100 mA, low emittance Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) designed to develop the technology and expertise required for future high-current CW ERLs. The project is embedded in a framework of international collaborations. Beyond this, HZB is heavily involved in the Helmholtz Association’s “Accelerator Research and Development” SRF Program (ARD) to develop CW SRF systems for next-generation accelerators. In this context the SRF Institute of Science and Technology is seeking an excellent candidate for the following position:

Post-doctoral Position in Superconducting RF Cavity Development

The ideal candidate will have experience working with SRF cavities, a strong background in experimental physics, engineering, or similar field. As part of the BERLinPro team the candidate will be responsible for multiple aspects of SRF cryomodule development which may include higher order mode absorber design and development, SRF cavity testing, as well SRF infrastructure development for basic R&D. The latter may include installation and commissioning of vertical testing dewars as well as implementation of appropriate cavity testing diagnostics such as cavity thermometry measurements, second sound quench detection, and internal optical inspection of SRF cavities. The candidate may also participate in CW SRF R&D such as Q0 improvement techniques or studies of thin-film coatings for use in next generation SRF cavities. This position requires a self-starter who can work independently.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Physics or closely related field in the last 5 years
  • Experience with SRF cavities and auxiliary components
  • Experience with LabVIEW is desirable
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken
