Postdoctoral Researcher position in Water Chemistry

The Faculty of Science and Forestry operates on the Kuopio and Joensuu campuses of the University of Eastern Finland. We are now inviting applications for a

Postdoctoral Researcher position (in Water Chemistry), Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Kuopio Campus

The position constitutes part of the Aquatic Research in Changing World research area, which is one of the emerging research areas of the University of Eastern Finland. The position involves research activities on the synthesis of novel nano-adsorbents or nano-composites for water and wastewater treatment with a special emphasis on resource recovery (such as metals and nutrients). A successful candidate will be expected to build and maintain a good publication record, apply for research funding from external sources, provide technical assistance to students working within the research group and carry out other academic activities that are also beneficial to the candidate’s career development.

A research background encompassing expertise in the synthesis of nanoparticles / nanocomposites, adsorption principles, materials characterization techniques with a good record of publications in peer-reviewed journals is a strong asset. Previous research experience in the synthesis of novel nanocomposites is highly preferred. Knowledge on mathematical modeling and related software will also be an advantage. The selection is primarily based on scientific excellence in the field of nano-materials and/or water treatment; previous experience in surface modification methods and characterization of nanoparticles, adsorption based water treatment and resource recovery from wastewaters will be of advantage.

The person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher position is required to hold a doctoral degree in Material Science or Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science & Engineering, or other closely related fields, which may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc. The applicant must have strong communication skills with excellent knowledge in English, both written and spoken.

The position will be filled for a fixed term of 15 months as agreed. The start date of the position is 1 April 2016 or as agreed.

The position is filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€2 865,30/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 46.3% of the job requirement component.
