Based in the Center for Device Thermography and Reliability (CDTR) at the University of Bristol, you will perform research in advanced electrical characterization and reliability of AlGaN/GaN and SiC transistors, in the microwave and power electronics fields. You will contribute to the development of novel electrical techniques for studying failure and degradation of these outstanding devices, in particular to understand the specific physical mechanisms responsible for degradation. AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) are delivering spectacular performance improvements in the fields of radar, satellite and communications, as well as switch mode applications. SiC devices are the emerging device system of choice for high voltage applications. Although the performance of these devices is already fully sufficient to enable tremendous new possibilities in these applications, reliability is presently still in question, and this research will focus on those outstanding issues. The CDTR is one of the leading centres in device physics, device reliability, and thermal management research, and has been responsible for the development of unique device analysis techniques. The group is active in many EU, US, and UK research programmes, and is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the US Office of Naval Research, the European Space Agency and other funding agencies as well as by industry.

For the postdoctoral researcher positions, you will have postgraduate experience in physics, materials science or engineering, with a good publication record. Previous experience either in the characterization of semiconductor materials (electrical and/or optical techniques), in RF or in power electronics, and/or in electronic or opto-electronic devices, and/or in device simulation would be desirable. A willingness to supervise postgraduate students will be necessary.

Bristol was voted the best city in England in terms of quality of life for employees in a survey of senior managers and board directors from 201 UK companies.

The Postdoctoral Researcher position is available for a period of at least two years with a starting salary in the £30,728 – £34,565 p.a. range, dependent on experience. If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience. Further information can be found at www.bristol.ac.uk/personnel/ftc.
