We have the opportunity for a postdoctoral research assistant with previous experience of in situ properties testing of nanomaterials in conjunction with analytical microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark field microscopy to join Professor Nicole Grobert’s group working on a project entitled ‘Dedicated growth of novel 1-dimensional materials for merging nanotechnological applications’ (DEDIGROWTH). The researcher will conduct in situ experiments and explore the properties of in-house produced nanomaterials using dedicated in situ holders in conjunction with the newly installed state-of-the-art high-resolution analytical transmission electron microscope (JEOL ARM200-F) featuring 100mm2 Centurion EDX detector and Gatan GIF Quantum 965 ER featuring Dual EELS and EFTEM capabilities.

The project is funded by the European Research Council, and the post is available immediately for a fixed-term of up to 14 months (end date 31 January 2016).

The successful candidate will have (by the start date) a PhD in either physics or materials science, preferably in the area of electron microscopy, and expertise in one or more of the areas described above. They should also demonstrate the ability and motivation to manage their research project, have excellent communication skills, a strong publication record and enjoy working collaboratively and co-operatively with colleagues in the Grobert group as well as collaborators in the UK and overseas.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on 25 September 2014 with interviews currently planned for 10 October 2014.
