The electron microscopy (EM) laboratory of the Department of Nanochemistry at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Genova, Italy (IIT) invites applications for a Postdoctoral position.

IIT was founded with the objective of promoting Italy’s technological development and further education in science and technology. In this sense, IIT is committed to achieving its scientific program, which sees its major inspirational principle in the integration between basic scientific research and the development of technical applications. Research covers scientific areas of high innovative content, representing the most advanced frontiers of modern technology with wide application opportunities in various fields: from medicine to industry, from computer science to robotics, life sciences and nanobiotechnology.

The EM laboratory currently hosts three transmission electron microscopes (JEOL JEM-1011; JEOL JEM-2200FS, image-corrected; FEI Tecnai G2 F20 with a Gatan spectrometer) and two scanning electron microscopes (JEOL JSM-6490LA, JEOL JSM-7500FA), together with a well-equipped EM preparation laboratory.

The Post-Doc researcher will focus on the investigation by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-based techniques of the nanostructured materials synthesized within the Nanochemistry Department of IIT. The main tools needed for this aim will be electron diffraction and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), high-angle annular dark field – scanning TEM (HAADF-STEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). In case of three-dimensional complex structures electron tomography techniques will be employed.

The selected candidate will also be involved in in-situ monitoring of structural/chemical transformations and of self-assembling of nanometer-sized units by means of a recently acquired ultra-fast direct detection camera.

The ideal candidate should hold (or be close to take) a PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related discipline, with at least three years hands-on experience with TEM, preferably on inorganic materials, ranging from semiconductors to ceramics and/or metals.

Additional experience in electron tomography, image simulation or reconstruction techniques, as well as a track record of publications on international field-related journals,, will be positively evaluated. The ideal candidate should be capable of working independently but also collaborating within a team, hence excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required. Fluency in English is essential.

Workplace: Genoa, Italy.

Salary is in line with international standards and with the candidate’s expertise.

Interested candidates should send their application including a detailed CV, publication list and contact information of 2 references, before May 15th 2015 to iulia.manolache@iit.it, always quoting “REF 39 Post doc Transmission EM” in subject header.

In order to comply with Italian law (art. 23 of Privacy Law of the Italian Legislative Decree n. 196/03), the candidate is kindly asked to give his/her consent to allow IIT to process his/her personal data. We inform you that the information you provide will be solely used for the purpose of evaluating and selecting candidates in order to meet the requirements of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.
Your data will be processed by Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, with its headquarters in Genoa, Via Morego 30, acting as the Data Holder, using computer and paper-based means, observing the rules on the protection of personal data, including those relating to the security of data, and they will not be communicated to thirds.
Please also note that, pursuant to art.7 of Legislative Decree 196/2003, you may exercise your rights at any time as a party concerned by contacting the Data Holder.

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is an Equal Opportunity Employer that actively seeks diversity in the workforce.
