We invite candidates to submit applications for a PostDoc position in the physical chemistry group of Professor C. Palivan, Department of Chemistry, at the University of Basel, Switzerland. The position is for one year, with possible prolongation up to two years.

Job description:

The overall task will be to further develop and initiate nanoscience projects based on combination of membrane proteins and synthetic membranes. A particularly important part of the project will aim for structural characterization by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of metal-proteins combined with polymer assemblies as a prerequisite for development of multifunctional systems, such as nanoreactors, or active surfaces.

This is an interdisciplinary project from which you will gain valuable experience in the domain of physical chemistry, biochemistry, and nanoscience. Your role will be to produce, and characterize membrane proteins to control the transport of various molecules through lipid and polymeric membranes. More information on the topics of the group in which you will be working can be found at http://www.chemie.unibas.ch/~palivan/

Your profile:

  • you will ideally have a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or biochemical engineering;
  • experience in membrane proteins is a must;
  • experience in EPR is a must; (experience in pulsed-EPR and fluorescence spectroscopy will be a supplementary advantage).
  • basic knowledge of protein biochemistry techniques (e.g. gel electrophoresis, protein purification);
  • experience in reconstitution of membrane proteins in synthetic membranes is desirable;
  • high records of publications in internationally refereed scientific journals
  • proficiency in English; German is an advantage.

Application: For further information, please contact Prof. Dr. Cornelia Palivan, (Cornelia.Palivan@unibas.ch, phone: +41.61.2673839). Interested candidates will send, by 15.09.2015: i. letter of motivation, ii. curriculum vitae, iii. names and contact details for two referees.

The University of Basel is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
