Postdoctoral Fellow: Proteomics

The UNCG Center for Translational Biomedical Research (CTBR), is a satellite to the Office of Research and Economic Development, and located at the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) in Kannapolis, NC (near Charlotte; ~70 miles SW of Greensboro). The center consists of two research groups, the Laboratory of Metabolomics and the Laboratory of Metabolic Liver Disease. The mission of the UNCG CTBR is to implement biomedical discoveries for understanding of disease pathogenesis and development of novel interventions for prevention and treatment.

The current research activities at the CTBR focus on metabolic diseases. Metabolism refers to all chemical reactions in the body cells to convert or use energy.

UNCG invites applications and nominations for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship position working under the direction of Dr. Qibin Zhang, at the Center for Translational Biomedical Research.

This position is expected to focus on discovery and validation of protein markers correlated to disease progression in type 1 diabetes mellitus, using bottom-up shotgun global proteomics and targeted proteomics approaches for a more accurate early diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and an improved understanding of the pathogenic mechanism of this devastating pancreatic disorder. The candidate may also have opportunity to collaborate with other research groups on profiling dysregulated proteins in other metabolic disorders, such as liver diseases, obesity, and other autoimmune diseases, etc.

Specific duties include:

  • Assisting the PI to establish a LC-MS based quantitative proteomics capability at the Center, including both isobaric tag labeled, label free global proteomics and MRM based targeted proteomics;
  • Conducting lab experiments including digestion of proteins from human plasma or originated from tissue, isobaric tag labeling at the peptide level, operation of instruments for the separation and analysis of peptides using nano LC-MS/MS, performing data base search, statistical data analysis and interpretation, and publication of results;
  • Participating in the mechanistic investigation of type 1 diabetes, obesity, liver diseases and autoimmune diseases with collaborators; assisting the PI to manage the research projects and supervise graduate and undergraduate students;
  • Interacting with research programs and faculty from other institutions at NCRC, the David H. Murdock Research Institute, as well as other research facilities and faculties in the Chemistry, and Nutrition Department on the UNCG campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry or Life Sciences field with a focus on biofluid or tissue proteomics study;
  • Fully trained in laboratory methods in bottom-up proteomic sample preparation from various sample matrices, chromatographic separations and biological mass spectrometry of peptides;
  • Possess strong skills in quantitative data analysis of bottom-up proteomics data and biological interpretation of results;
  • Possess sufficient communication skills, critical thinking and independent working skills;
  • Have the ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere;
  • Have the desire to excel in this novel academic research environment.
