Postdoc Scholarship Position In Near-Field Optics - Sweden

KTH in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes architecture, industrial management and urban planning. There are a total of just over 15,000 first and second level students and more than 1,600 doctoral students. KTH has almost 4,300 employees.

The school of Information and Communication Technology, ICT, conducts research and education at leading international level in material physics, photonics/optics, electronic systems, integrated devices and circuits, as well as communication systems. Our research activity encompasses both basic and applied level. We offer a wide spectrum of educational programs at undergraduate, masters and doctoral level. The ICT School fosters close collaboration with Swedish and international companies and research institutes as well as surrounding associations such as Kista Science City.

Description of the position

The optics/photonics group is looking for a postdoc to run research in the area of near-field optics. In particular, light interaction with nano-sized particles and plasmonic structures will be investigated. Special attention will be given to polarization and coherence properties of localized optical waves.

The researcher will be involved in investigation and formulation of fundamental properties of localized electromagnetic excitations, such as evanescent optical waves and plasmonic waves. The project assumes both theoretical study and numerical simulations. Thus, successful candidate is expected to have a strong theoretical background, experience with numerical methods implemented in the theory of electromagnetism (FDTD, FEM), and using proper simulation tools, e.g. Comsol, R-Soft, Lumerical, and similar.

At the same time, the postdoc will participate in experimental part of the project, and should have good knowledge of modern measurement techniques and instrumentation used in nano-scale research, e.g. SNOM, AFM.

Qualifications

The applicant should have a PhD degree in optics/photonics or related area. Strong background in theoretical fundamentals of electromagnetism and experience in numerical simulations of near-field effects, nano-photonics, plasmonics will be an advantage. The applicant must be strongly motivated, able to work independently and perform critical thinking and analysis. The applicant must have a good command of English, both written and oral, and be capable to present research results.
