The research at DTU Nanotech utilizes micro and nanofabrication both in the form of top-down methods and through self-organization processes. A significant part of the research is directed towards generating new life-sciences knowledge and applications. Most of the life sciences and polymer research is placed in a newly renovated building.

Responsibilities and tasks
The position involves the synthesis of ceramic nanoparticles using different methods including microemulsion synthesis, sol-gel processes, and possibly alternatives to these methods.

In collaboration with the company Aproxi ApS and DTU Energy Conversion we seek to develop zirconia nanoparticles that have the capability of expanding due to a phase transition on exposure to water. We have shown that the expansion concept is feasible and works (Mette Skovgaard, Kristoffer Almdal, Bent F. Sørensen, Søren Linderoth, Alexander van Lelieveld. Journal of Composite Materials, 45, 2817-2822 (2011)). However, retaining the capability to expand and synthesize the zirconia in the form of nanoparticle simultaneously is a challenge. The tasks involved in the job are to experimentally test various ideas for how the expandable nanoparticle can be synthesized. Since the project is a collaboration with several partners and frequent interaction between the partners, good communication skills are necessary.

The work place will be DTU Nanotech in Lyngby.
