Within its various modes of operations, ToF-SIMS is a versatile analytical tool providing elemental and molecular information with highest detection sensitivity and good imaging spatial resolution on any kind of solid surfaces. It can also provide in-depth and 3D chemical information via ion sputtering. However, the latter generates a number of artifacts, structural and chemical defects.

The present project aims at the elaboration of an alternative method for 3D chemical analysis to insure defect-free analysis, based on in-situ microtome slicing. A dedicated cryo-mictrotome tool will be developed, constructed and tested in-situ within our ToF-SIMS 5 instrument. After successful integration and demonstrated reliability, the tool will be used on real-world applications, to investigate chemical processes involved in organic devices and bio-materials.

The ToF-SIMS group within our Nanoscale Materials Science Laboratory in partnership with the Snedeker Lab at Balgrist/ETH is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate with learning and focusing capabilities to work on this SNF-granted project.

You have a strong background in materials science, physics or related discipline and a strong interest in science. Excellent communication skills and good knowledge in English (oral and written) are required.

We offer a highly stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surrounding. The main work will be held at Empa Dübendorf under the supervision of Prof. Hans J. Hug (Head of the Laboratory), with support on all engineering aspects and on ToF-SIMS science. The work within the active medical environment at the Balgrist University Clinic will provide support on bio-medical science.

You will therefore benefit from a central position between the two institutions and research groups, inferring you with a unique highly multidisciplinary scientific experience involving advanced materials science, engineering and biology.

We are looking forward to your application including a letter of motivation, your CV and contact details of three referees.

For further Information please contact Dr. Laetitia Bernard,laetitia.bernard@empa.ch.

Please submit your application online and upload all documents (“pdf”-file is recommended) through this webpage. Any other way of applying will not be considered.
