Empa is the interdisciplinary research and services institution for material sciences and technology development of the ETH Domain.

The Group Functional Membranes Group, part of the Laboratory for Protection and Physiology at Empa, St. Gallen, is looking for a

PhD student in chemistry and material sciences with a high interest in technology development

Nano- and micro-sized materials with functions determined at the molecular level require an effective and well-defined pattern to assemble and organize in order to potentially improve their performance. In this context, microfluidic platforms have gained a growing interest since they can handle reactions at micro-scale, where some fluidic physical phenomena are dramatically different from those observed in the macroscopic setting. For example, fine spatial localization of small reagent volumes, controlled solvent evaporation, and a special synergy between diffusion times of reagents and their reactivity, are some of the unique features that have evoked a significant interest in nano- or microsized assembly of materials by microfluidics means. Herein, we propose a PhD position where site-specific crystal growth and device fabrication will be explored employing microfluidic technologies.

Your tasks
  • Design and fabrication of microfluidic platforms and devices including their characterization
  • Study and characterize platforms which enable control crystal growth and device fabrication
  • Electrical characterization of the materials used and their study as sensory elements
  • Publication of results in scientific journals and at international conferences
Your profile
  • Master in nanotechnology, chemistry or materials science
  • Skills and expertise in organic synthesis and electronics
  • Knowledge in advanced drawing software such as AutoCAD
  • Good knowledge of English is a requisite and preferably has good knowledge of German

We offer a challenging position in a materials research institution with outstanding infrastructure and an interdisciplinary surrounding. The position is available upon agreement. For additional information please contact Dr. Josep Puigmarti, josep.puigmarti@empa.ch.

Please send your application including a CV and names and addresses of two references.

Please submit your application online and upload all documents (“pdf”-file is recommended) through this webpage. Any other way of applying will not be considered.
