DTU Environment invites highly talented young researchers who have obtained outstanding results during their MSc studies and who have demonstrated excellence and potential in their field of study, to apply for a PhD scholarship in the Research Group “Risk Assessment of Chemicals and Nanomaterials” at DTU Environment, which consists of 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 4 Post Docs and 7 PhD students. We do research within environmental chemistry, environmental toxicology and environmental risk assessment of chemicals and nanomaterials.

The PhD student will be part of a research team working with characterization, ecotoxicity, bioaccumulation and risk assessment of nano- and micro-sized particles. We have extensive collaboration with academic and industrial partners worldwide. For more information about recent research of the team: http://www.env.dtu.dk/english/Research/EC/Project-ENVNano.

Responsibilities and tasks
The working title of the PhD study is “Uptake and effects of nanoparticles and microplastics in aquatic organism”. This research involves development and application of techniques to expose aquatic organisms to nanoparticles and microplastics and to trace and quantify particles in organisms at the celluar and sub-celluar level. A fundamental part of the research is the application of NanoSIMS for studying distribution of particles within organisms. The aim is to improve the linkage between particle properties, exposure conditions and internal distribution within organisms. The PhD study is carried out in close collaboration between DTU Environment and  Laboratory for Biological Geochemistry at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Research stays at EPFL is therefore an integrated part of the PhD study.

The work will include

  • Studies of the influence of exposure conditions on uptake and effects of nano- and micro-particles in aquatic organisms
  • Particle characterization to determine particle size distributions and chemical composition in experimental media
  • Conceptual and experimental work with state-of-the-art techniques of internal localization of nano- and micro-particles
  • Experimental work will be done in close collaboration with EPFL as well as relevant national and international partners.

Documented experience with characterization and/or uptake of nano- or microparticles is a prerequisite.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Prof. Anders Baun (DTU) and Prof. Anders Maibom (EPFL).
