Job description:

Monocrystalline GaN is currently a hot topic as a semiconductor material for high-performance transistors. In this project we want to investigate the properties of the related polycrystalline GaN and AlGaN materials for applications in semiconductor devices. Polycrystalline materials are easier and cheaper to make, but very little has so far been reported about this material in the literature. The group of Semiconductor Components is now recruiting for a PhD student who will address deposition aspects of GaN and AlGaN films and perform extended physical, electrical and optical characterization of these layers.

Challenges in this project are:
  • Development of novel deposition processes for polycrystalline GaN and AlGaN.
  • Growing and characterizing (both in- and ex-situ) the films.
  • Optimizing the films in terms of microelectronic applications.

The project is financed by the Dutch Technology Foundation STW (http://www.stw.nl) via the Open Technology Program (OTP). The research will be carried out at the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands. The PhD student will be under guidance of several supervisors (Dr. Alexey Kovalgin, Dr. Ray Hueting, Prof. Dr. Jurriaan Schmitz and Prof. Dr. Dirk Gravesteijn) of the University of Twente. The research program is under the close attention of NXP, Philips, and ASM International.

Requirements:

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher (M/F) with a M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering, nanotechnology, applied physics or a related topic, with excellent experimental and theoretical skills. We seek candidates with good team spirit, who like to work in an internationally oriented environment. Fluency in English is a requirement. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.

Applications

Applications should include an application/motivation letter, emphasizing your specific interest, qualifications and motivation to apply for this position, a detailed CV (resume), a publication list, contact details of at least 2 referees, and an academic transcript of B.Sc. and M.Sc. education. A TOEFL or IELTS score is generally requested to verify sufficient mastering of the English language.

You can electronically apply for this position before November 8th, 2013 – http://www.utwente.nl/vacatures/ . For more information please contact our secretary of Semiconductor Components Group Mrs. Remke Assink at R.Assink@utwente.nl.

Organization:

We offer an interesting temporary research position in a dynamic and international environment, with the benefits of an industrial laboratory as well as academic research. You will be appointed for a period of four years. A training program is a part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible for (up to a maximum of 20% of your time).
