The Cluster of Excellence 'Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden'
(cfaed) at TU Dresden offers a fixed-term

PhD Position (E 13 TV-L)

Research area:Robust and responsive polymersome nanocarriers for guided information delivery in microsystems and chemical processors
cfaed Investigators: Prof. Dr. Birgitte Voit
Dr. Dietmar Appelhans
cfaed research path:Chemical Information Processing Path
Terms: 50% of the fulltime weekly hours in the 1st year, 66% of the fulltime weekly hours in the 2nd / 3rd year, the position is a 3 years appointment and starts asap.
The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research
Contracts Act (

Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG).
Position and Requirements
This project will address the synthesis, preparation and modification of amphiphilic block copolymers which can assemble to polymersomes.
Crosslinking possibilities (photochemical/irreversible and chemi-
cal/reversible) as well as pH sensitive units should be integrated into the
unpolar block to allow the preparation of very stable responsive poly-
mersome-based nanocarriers in the size of 100-200 nm. The polymersome
nanocarrier will be equipped with at least one, but preferable several orthogonal and very selective binding units in the outer part of the membrane. One goal is that the polymersome is functionalized with a binding
unit to microtubule/motor protein assemblies to be carried in a directed
way within a microsystem replacing natural vesicles by more versatile and
robust polymersome carrier. Other binding units should allow specific binding on selective areas within a chemical processor which have been previously surface modified with corresponding binding partner units. Selective
physical (reversible) as well as chemical binding should be considered, e.g.,
biotin/streptavidin or cyclodextrin/hydrophob binding, as well as click reactions. Release of the cargo should be triggered e.g. by changes in pH or by
the presence of biomolecules (e.g. enzymes degrading the crosslinking
units).
The project should be strongly linked to projects of the Prof. Diez group
and projects related to surface engineering of microchannels.
We aim at attracting the best talent in the respective research fields and
expect the following: university masterĀ´s/diploma degree (or equivalent) in
Chemistry; substantiated knowledge and experience in controlled polymer
synthesis and organic chemistry; an independent, target- and solution-
driven work attitude; inter- and multidisciplinary thinking; strong motivation
and interest to join one of the most ambitious interdisciplinary research
clusters; an integrative and cooperative personality with excellent commu-
nication and social skills; fluency in English - written and oral; desirable,
knowledge of bioconjugation methods.
What we offer
You will join a team of enthusiastic scientists who creatively pursue their
individual research agenda inspired by the cluster's innovative approach
and support. Your PhD-research will be fostered by the cfaed philosophy to
promote young researchers which includes: access to state of the art re-
search of leading academic institutes; individual supervision by a Thesis
Advisory Committee; possibility to earn (seed) grants of up to ā‚¬ 10.000;
promotion of gender equality and family-friendly work environment.
Informal enquiries can be submitted to Prof. Brigitte Voit, Tel +49 (351) 4658-591; Email: brigitte.voit@tu-dresden.de
Applications from women are particularly welcome. The same applies to
persons with disabilities.
Application Procedure
Your application (in English only) should include: motivation letter, CV, copy of degree certificate, transcript of grades (i.e. the official list of coursework including your grades) and proof of English language skills.
Complete applications should be submitted preferably by e-mail as a single PDF-document quoting the reference number: PhD1401_E10 in the
subject header to: recruiting.cfaed@tu-dresden.de (Please note: We are
currently not able to receive electronically signed and encrypted data). or alternatively by post to: TU Dresden, cfaed, A. Eichner, 01062 Dresden, Germany. The closing date for applications is 24.02.2014 (stamped arrival
date of the university central mail service applies).
