Within the recently awarded STW Perspective Program: Understanding Processes using Operando Nanoscopy (UPON) we are looking for a 4 year PhD student or a 3 year postdoc at the Delft University of Technology for project B2: Corrosion inhibition of aluminium alloys studied by in-situ TEM

This PhD position is on a project in collaboration with AkzoNobel company on corrosion protection of aerospace aluminium alloys. Corrosion inhibitors can be released from organic coatings to protect the underlying metal in a coating defect upon damage. To find suitable inhibitors the local mechanism of the corrosion process and protection is studied in a liquid cell nanoreactor with a corrosive electrolyte and an applied electric field to perform electrochemical measurements in-situ in a transmission electron microscope to study corrosion inhibition and metal-inhibitor interactions locally. The nanoreactors will be produced in a parallel project within UPON (Understanding Processes using Operando Nanoscopy), an STW (www.stw.nl) and industry supported program consisting of 8 projects concentrating on the MEMS technique based development of nanoreactors and actual scientific and industrial applications (see the pdf). TEMs like a Cs corrected cubed FEI titan are available.

Requirements:

  • master degree in chemistry, materials science or physics.
  • experience in corrosion science and/or transmission electron microscopy is a pre.
  • excellent writing and oral communication skills in English.
  • excellent collaboration skills (with other scientists and technicians in the larger program as well as with industrial partners).
  • The application (directed to j.m.c.mol@tudelft.nl and h.w.zandbergen@tudelft.nl) should consist of the following parts: a motivation for your application (in Dutch or English); extended curriculum vitae; a description of your obtained scientific degree, or the moment at which the graduation is expected; a digital copy of your master thesis; a list of courses and marks.
