General context

In the era of nanotechnology there is a great interest for multifunctional devices and a growing amount of research aims to optimize the employed materials (multi-layered materials, composites …). Among these, materials where several ferroic orders (ferroelectric, magnetic …) coexist are scarce. In recent years, we have obtained perovskite-like structures based on Mn, Cr and V where we observe simultaneously ferroelectricity and a magnetic order. The investigation of the correlations between the structure and the magnetic and ferroelectric ordering in these RMnO3 phases (R = Bi, Pb) is an important challenge in materials physics. The goal is to be able to control magnetic effects by electrical fields which can be used in the development of new memory devices. The fabrication of such materials necessitates synthesis under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. The samples obtained in this way contain often several phases in powder form. These fabrication constraints induce difficulties in the precise structure determination of the newly synthesized phases.
