KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 13,400 first and second level students and almost 1,900 doctoral students. KTH has 4,900 employees.

The School of Engineering Sciences carries out a wide range of research at the international front line, from fundamental disciplines such as Physics and Mathematics, to Engineering Mechanics with applications such as Aeronautics and Vehicle Engineering. We also offer university degree programs in Engineering Physics, Vehicle Engineering, and 'Open entrance', as well as a number of international masters programmes.

The Quantum Electronics and quantum Optics group (QEO) has been pioneering quantum optics and quantum-information research in Sweden, with a history going back to 1985. The group’s research has spanned from fundamental issues such as uncertainty limits, quantum erasure and delayed choice experiments, quantum non-locality, quantum teleportation, and mutually unbiased bases, to more applied topics such as quantum coding, quantum interferometry, quantum cryptography and single photon sources. Recently, we started a new project which utilized surface-enhanced optical nonlinearity for application in nonclassical light source. The project will be carried out in collaboration with two laboratories at KTH, which have access to the Electrum laboratory located on the Kista campus and the Nanofabrication laboratory at AlbaNova University Center. The QEO group is located at the School of Engineering Sciences at AlbaNova where the position is going to be placed.

Project

During the last few years, the optical nonlinearity in nanostructures, and in particular in semiconductor nanostructures, has received increased attention both for new applications and also due to significant advancements in nanofabrication. The quality of recently developed fabrication processes allows fabrication of nanostructures where the surface effects, due to strong light confinement at the surfaces, can be comparable or even dominate over the bulk contributions.

This project focusses on the optical nonlinearity at the surface of nanostructures with the main emphasis on the application to quantum optics. By tailoring the geometry of nanostructures the phase-matching condition can be satisfied, leading to the efficient parametric down-conversion process that can be used for generation of polarization-entangled photon-pairs. The project includes the fundamental studies of optical nonlinearity at the surface of semiconductor-based nano-waveguides, modeling of various structures, fabrication in the clean-room and the experimental analyses.

Qualifications

A suitable background for this position would be a Master of Science in Physics or Electrical Engineering with a specialization in optics, photonics, laser physics or quantum mechanics. In addition to the traditional academic merits, a relevant degree project, experience in clean-room processing, international experience, and language skills are regarded as advantageous qualifications.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.

Employment

Form of employment: Time limited.
Start date: According to agreement.
The salary follows the directions provided by KTH.
The employment is four years with a possibility of maximum up to five years. Up to 20 percent department duties are included in the employment.
