Applications are invited for a PhD position in the Air Quality and Particle Research group (http://www.ifu.ethz.ch/IE, Prof. Dr. J. Wang). The successful candidate will be hosted by the Institute of Environmental Engineering, ETH Zürich and will also work at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research). Position available from June 1, 2014 or upon agreement.

PhD position – Filtration experiment and modeling for air quality and workplace safety

The research is related to developing standard methodology to determine effectiveness of filtration media against nanomaterials with dimensions down to 3 nm. The project directly contributes to mandate M/461 "Standardisation activities regarding nanotechnologies and nanomaterials" by the European Committee of Standardization, and setup of a standard at the international level. The student will use state-of-the-art instruments for nanoparticle measurements, design and carry out experiments, and perform numerical simulation to understand the results. Innovative applications of filtration pertinent to air quality and workplace safety will be studied.

We are looking for suitable candidates with a master level degree in environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or related fields with excellent grades. Good experimental capability is of high value. Good command of English is required.
