PhD position - Dresden, Germany

The Cluster of Excellence 'Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden'
(cfaed) at TU Dresden offers within the Dresden Center for Nanoanalysis
a fixed-term

PhD Position (E 13 TV-L)

Topic:High-resolution organic thin film characterization with
minimal sample damage
cfaed Investigators:Prof. Dr. Ehrenfried Zschech
research area: Organic/Polymer Path - Dresden Center for
Nanoanalysis
Terms: 50% of fulltime weekly hours, the position is fixed-term
until 31.10.2017; start is as soon as possible
The period of employment is governed by the Fixed
Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitver-
tragsgesetz - WissZeitVG).
Position and Requirements
The PhD topic includes the high-resolution characterization of organic thin films with the particular focus on solar cell applications, mainly by imaging and analytical electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Particularly a methodology for the determination of sub-100nm domains has to be developed and applied, depending on synthesis and treatment parameters. Particularly
EELS spectra have to be analyzed, considering theoretical calculations. In addition, the kinetics of the structure evolution in such heterogeneous thin
films has to be studied as a function of light and strain effects. A close interdisciplinary teamwork with partners of the Organic Materials Platform will be necessary to interpret the results and to make sure that the results can be used to prepare optimized devices.
We aim at attracting the best talent in the respective research fields and expect the following: an outstanding master's/diploma university degree (or equivalent) in physic, organic chemistry or material sciences; first research experience, preferably in the fields of electron microscopy; solid knowledge of other analytical methods; first experience in modeling and simulation techniques; an independent, target- and solution-driven work
attitude; inter- and multidisciplinary thinking; strong motivation and interest to join one of the most ambitious interdisciplinary research clusters; an integrative and cooperative personality with excellent communication and social skills; fluency in English - written and oral.
What we offer
You will join a team of enthusiastic scientists who creatively pursue their individual research agenda inspired by the cluster's innovative approach and support. Your PhD-research will be fostered by the cfaed philosophy to promote young researchers which includes: access to state of the art research of leading academic institutes; individual supervision by a Thesis Advisory Committee; possibility to earn (seed) grants of up to € 10.000; promotion of gender equality and family-friendly work environment.
Informal enquiries can be submitted to Prof. Dr. Ehrenfried Zschech, Tel.: +49-(0351)-888-15543;
