Reference No.  EM 2015/1

The Scientific Division Energy Materials
(Institute Methods for Material Development)
is looking for a

PhD Student (f/m)
M.Sc./Diplom in Physics or Chemistry

The appointment is limited to 3 years in the framework of a third party project.
The salary is based on the German Collective Agreement of the Public Service (TVöD).

Topic of the doctoral thesis:
“Electron Dynamics of Ultrafast Energy Transfer Processes in Neutral Quantum Dots”

Responsibilities:
-The newly founded interdisciplinary Freigeist junior research group of Dr. Annika Bande in the Institute of Methods for Material Development and the joint lab JuLiq with the Freie Universität Berlin is funded by Volkswagen foundation. Its research focus is electron dynamics of ultrafast energy transfer processes in clusters of real atoms and artificial atom-like semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) induced by long-range electron correlation [Bande, J. Chem. Phys. 138 (2013) 214104; Pont, Bande, Cederbaum, Phys. Rev. B 88 (2013) 241304(R)]. Detailed information also regarding future position openings can be found at: http://www.pci.uni-heidelberg.de/tc/usr/annika/
-The aim of this doctoral thesis is to develop a methodology for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for electrons and holes in neutral QDs. This will allow for the investigation of the laser-induced interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) process after optical excitation in colloidal QDs which points towards the improvement of modern QD solar cells. The project will be accompanied by the experimental teams in our institute.
-The concrete responsibilities will be the conduction and analysis of quantum dynamics calculations, the extension of present software codes, the active collaboration with the experimentalists in our working group, and the presentation of results at conferences and in scientific journals.

Requirements:
-A background in quantum mechanics/chemistry is required
-Programming skills are beneficial
-Interest in material sciences and in modern, time-resolved spectroscopy
-Ability for team work and for independent solution of problems
-Good command of English (written and spoken) is expected

Informal inquiries:            Ms Maha Dürr, email: maha.duerr@helmholtz-berlin.de

Application deadline:          February 6, 2015

As HZB endeavors to increase the number of women working in the scientific field, women are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference to others of equal qualification.

Applicants should send their application, quoting reference number EM 2015/1, to Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH, Abteilung Personal und Soziales, Hahn-Meitner-Platz 1, 14109 Berlin (Email: jobs@helmholtz-berlin.de).
