We are inviting outstanding candidates to apply as Ph.D. students.

We offer studies in the field of heart, vessel and lung biology. Our areas cover development, remodelling and regeneration, stem cell biology, developmental genetics and translational research.

We are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment such as

  • Automatic Fluorescent Microscopes (Image Express)
    Flow Cytometer (sorters and analysers)
  • Laser Scanning Focal Microscopes
  • Mass Spectrometers
  • Micro Arrays
  • Nano String Platforms
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Sequencers
  • State of the art animal facilities (mouse, zebra fish and newts)

Doctoral fellows will participate in a three-year professional graduate school program including seminars, methods courses and retreats and will benefit from the advanced scientific offerings of the institute and the universities. A thesis committee will provide feedback and guidance and mentorship for future career development. For their research projects doctoral students are supplied with generous funding.

Successful candidates will be able to choose a research project from one of the research groups. Depending on qualifications and the selected projects, doctoral students may be eligible to register for one of the four doctoral degrees offered, including PhD, Dr. rer. nat., Dr. hum. biol., and Dr. med.

Before applying, please ask yourself if you fulfil the following criteria:

  • Authentic desire and drive to commit to a three-year doctoral program
  • Willingness to develop further and learn in a multidisciplinary environment of talented people and high-end facilities
  • Interest in living as part of an international community in the center of Germany
  • Solid English language ability, written and spoken as well as capability to work with English publications
  • Fun in solving problems, carrying out analysis and working with attention to detail
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, medicine, bioinformatics or related by October 2014
  • Above average performance in scientific field and academia
  • Hands-on lab experience

The initial evaluation will consider the completeness of the application, the quality and degree of adaptation of the motivational letter, the performance during the university degree, English language ability as well as experience in the lab.

Tasks of a doctoral student include:

  • Independently project managing, conducting and documenting a research project
  • Planning, designing, putting into practice and controlling all laboratory and experimental work
  • Using methods such as
  • Bioinformatics
  • Cell Sorting and Flow Cytometry
  • Generation of Transgenic Animals
  • Genomics
  • High Resolution Confocal (in vivo) Imaging
  • Metabolomics
  • Proteomics (Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry)
  • Participation in curricular and extra-curricular activities, such as lectures, soft skills courses, methods courses, retreats, presentations, PhD committee, thesis committee
  • Team working with other scientists and mutual support in experiments

Some example lines of research include:

  • Aging and Adaptation of the Cardiovascular System
  • Alveolarization and Lung Regeneration
  • Bioinformatics
  • Blood Vessel growth (Angiogenesis and Arteriogenesis)
  • Endothelium and Metastasis
  • Genetic and Molecular Mechanisms in Organ Development
