INSA-Lyon – Lyon Institute of Nanotechnology/CNRS

Position: ESR fellowship within the 2012-ITN-FP7, 317466, INFIERI project.

Duration: 3 years.

Contract Start: January 1st 2014.

Application Deadline: The vacancy is opened until a suitable candidate has been found.

Host Institution: Lyon Institute of Nanotechnology (INL) with registration to INSA-Lyon.

Project description

The project “INFIERI” implements a European Research and Training Network for the development of intelligent devices and tools for cutting-edge applications in Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Medical Physics and Telecommunications. Within the framework of that project, we aim at developing and optimizing a detector based on avalanche silicon pixel with its near associated readout electronics fully integrated with the detector. This is to take full advantage of the assets of this new pixel technology naturally 3D compatible, low material and easy to readout thus especially suited for tracking devices. The research work will include participating to the development of a demonstrator of the avalanche pixel sensors in standard CMOS for testing the main performances in terms of main detecting characteristics and noise, followed by the development of the basics of the full signal processing electronics for a matrix based structure of the demonstrator. In the course of this work, the candidate will be introduced to simulation tools to (i) understand the physics behaviour of the detector, (ii) participate to the development of the sensors and layout of the new sensor and its associated readout electronics. The candidate will also participate to the design and setting up as well as the tests themselves to characterize the demonstrator(s). She/He will be supervised by experts in the various fields tackled in this project i.e. silicon detector, microelectronics (Very Deep Sub Micron technology), 3D interconnect technology and test bench activities including test beams. Stays in an industrial firm expert in 3D-technology as well as in other Labs experts in the domain in Europe and USA are planned during the 3 years.

Site description

The Lyon Institute of Nanotechnology – INL (http://inl.cnrs.fr) is a 250 person-strong research institute. It carries out research activities in the field of Nanotechnology, from Materials to circuit design. Its 4 main research axes concern functional materials, electronics, photonics and photo-voltaics, biotechnology and health.

INL is a CNRS joint research lab, part of the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL1) in Lyon and closely linked to three high level engineering schools: ECL – Ecole Centrale de Lyon, INSA – Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, CPE – Ecole supérieure de Chimie Physique Electronique de Lyon.

The candidate will be registered in the doctoral school linked to INSA-Lyon (http://www.insa-lyon.fr/).

Profile and requirements

Applicants must have a M.Sc. preferably in Electronics Engineering, have not yet obtained a Ph.D. degree, and in any case must not have more than four years from the start of their research career (counted from the diploma that gives right to embark in a doctorate studies). Instrumentation skills are especially appreciated. Gender balance and equal opportunity policy are part of the INFIERI hiring strategy. A fluent English level, team working and ability and availability to travel are important. In order to fulfill the eligibility criteria of the Marie Curie ITN at the date of recruitment, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in France for more than 12 months for the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. French candidates can apply if they have resided in another country for more than 3 years of the last 4 years.

Application

Application must contain: letter of motivation, detailed curriculum vitae, transcripts of B.Sc. & M.Sc. degrees and two reference letters. To apply, please send the required documents with subject “ESR INFIERI” to: francis.calmon@insa-lyon.fr  and asavoy@cern.ch
