Join our dynamic team, Quantum Computing and Devices (QCD), to make a difference in physics. Our new laboratory is based in Micronova, the national center for nano- and microtechnology, which has thousands of square meters of cleanroom space with the modern equipment in our use. The millikelvin dilution refrigerators at QCD Labs together with the vicinity of Low Temperature Laboratory makes our innovative group an ideal working environment for creating and implementing breakthrough ideas. In the past five years, we have published more than 60 physics articles in high-level journals including Nature. Your work will be focused on the experimental studies of quantum nanoelectronic devices, namely, on a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant project on single-photon microwave devices including engineered environments in the framework of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED). The project aims at developing revolutionizing technologies for photon control and measurement in the GHz range for future applications in quantum information processing and communications.

As an applicant for the postdoc position, you should have or be near in submitting your PhD thesis in physics or an applicable field of electrical engineering. For the PhD student position, only Master’s degree is required to begin. Applicants with experience in measurements using microwave frequencies (readout of superconducting cavities/qubits, rf-SET etc.) are greatly appreciated. Also applicants with experience in other types of low-temperature nanoelectronic devices are strongly encouraged to apply. Especially for PhD students, applications from researchers with no previous experience on the subject but outstanding performance in their own field (including theory) are also welcome.

  • Application deadline: 15th November, 2014 (late applications are also considered)
  • More information on the research topic here
  • Starting date: from November 2014 to May 2015
  • Length of contract: typically 2 years for postdocs, 1.5+2.5 years for PhD students
  • Salary: 43 000–48 000 €/y (postdoc, experience), 30 000–36 000 €/y (PhD student, progress)

Please email your application with subject “Postdoc/PhD student application to QCD” to the group leader, Dr. Mikko Möttönen (mikko.mottonen*at*aalto.fi), together with the attachments listed below.

List of attachments to your application:

  • A brief letter of motivation and introduction (1 page max, not needed if in the cover letter).
  • Resume or CV indicating at least your name, contact information, birth date, working history, theoretical knowledge of physics and engineering, experimental skills, language skills, completed and ongoing university degrees indicating the grade point average, and honors and awards.
  • List of publications and submitted works (not needed if included in the CV)
  • List of persons that could be contacted for reference (thesis advisors etc.) [optionally reference letters (up to 3 for the postdoc and up to 2 for the PhDstudent position)]
