In this work, a SMT device prototype has been proposed for chemical sensing application, which is sensitive at the single molecular level. The operational methodology and performance have been investigated using first-principles calculations within a density func- tional theory framework. The charge stability diagram carries unique signature of the molecule present within the SMT and this property can be used to detect the presence of an individual mole- cule from a mixture of different molecules. Details about the possible experimental realisation of such a device has been discussed. The present approach provides a unique combination of very simple design with operation, perfect gate-island coupling, large temperature range of operation and extremely high detection sensitivity.
