IBM Research - Almaden is searching for a Nanostructured/Nanoporous Materials Chemist to lead projects involving design, synthesis and characterization of new nanostructured materials for a variety of applications. In particular, this position will drive the research and development of novel materials for back-end-of-the-line applications to further strengthen IBM’s position as a global leader in high performance microprocessor and server technology.

We are seeking highly motivated experienced individuals who are interested to join our multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary research team. The successful candidate will have a interdisciplinary background in the chemistry and physics of porous materials including synthesis and characterization. Experience in sol-gel chemistry, polymer science and thin-films preparation and characterization is required along with a good understanding of thin-film mechanical properties. Familiarity with nanotechnology and back-end-of-the-line integration processes is required. Responsibilities span a wide range from fundamental and applied materials research to transferring materials technologies to our IBM Albany development fab. Experience in materials design for Internet of Things (IoT) devices is a plus.

This position requires frequent interaction with materials and process development teams at IBM Albany and external partners. In particular, a successful candidate will be expected to lead as well as collaborate with others. As such, the candidate should have proven written and oral communication skills as evidenced by a record of publications and presentations and demonstrated success in team-based projects. The ability to articulate difficult concepts to an audience with diverse technical backgrounds is critical for success at this position. The applicant is expected to identify key problems, generate novel solutions and reduce them to practice, disseminate the results of such activities to internal colleagues/partners and capture relevant intellectual property via patent applications.

Candidates should have a PhD in inorganic chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field.
