Lectureships in Materials Chemistry at Lancaster University

Lectureship (x2) in Materials Chemistry

Lancaster University – 50th Anniversary Lectureships

Salary: £33,242 to £39,685 *

Application Deadline: 22nd February 2015

These posts refer to the University-Wide initiative to establish a Centre of Excellence in Materials Science at Lancaster, and two posts are available in Chemistry to kick-off this exciting initiative. These lectureships will be based in the Department of Chemistry and you will be expected to work with colleagues in other departments, notably Physics and Engineering, as part of a wider Centre of Excellence in Materials Science. The Chemistry Department was ranked 10th in the UK on output quality in REF 2014 and already has a cross-disciplinary theme in materials.

We are seeking outstanding upcoming researchers in areas of Materials Chemistry related to either Functional Photonic Materials or Responsive Smart Materials. Chemistry has world-class facilities for materials synthesis and characterisation including GPC, an MS suite with accurate mass and MALDI instruments, hot stage microscope, liquid crystal characterisation facilities, DSC, solution and solid state NMR (SS-NMR 400&700MHz), time-resolved fluorescence and time-resolved fluorescence microscopy, Nanoscribe fabrication, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction with variable temperature facilities and a well-established computational group active in the materials area.

You will be expected to contribute to the teaching of general chemistry as well as materials chemistry and develop world-class research programmes that cross the traditional boundaries of chemistry and contribute to the Centre of Excellence in Materials Science.

As part of your research plan, you should submit descriptions of their proposed research (maximum 2 sides A4) in the areas of functional photonic materials (e.g. fluorescent molecular devices, light-harvesting systems, quantum dots) or responsive smart materials (e.g. liquid crystals, 2D energetic materials, responsive / bioactive polymers).

Applications are welcome from both experimentalists and modellers and should highlight potential for interaction with other partners in the areas of material science and related areas both within Lancaster University and in the wider scientific community.

* Appointments will normally be made with starting salaries in the range £33,242 - £39,685 but appointments may be made at a more senior level including Senior Lecturer/Reader.
