The Advanced Technology Institute at the University of Surrey consists of approximately 160 researchers working in fundamental and applied research in nanotechnology, quantum technology, carbon electronics and photonics, as well as a range of cutting edge research enabled by our ion-beam centre. The institute benefits from strong interaction between experimental and theoretical activities and houses researchers from the electronic engineering and physics departments.

We are offering a funded ATI PhD scholarship within the areas of nano-electronics, ion-beam research, and experimental and theoretical photonics. For a list of example projects see here and for additional information about areas of research in the ATI please refer to our research homepage. The ATI strongly encourages interaction and successful candidates will be expected to embrace this philosophy for the development of photonic, electronic and biological materials and devices ranging from fundamental science through to practical implementation.

This prestigious scholarship provides a stipend and funding to cover home student (UK and EU) fees. Applicants from outside of the EU must be able to demonstrate funding for the additional overseas student fees. Eligible candidates must have or expect to obtain a First Class undergraduate degree or Distinction at Masters degree level in Physics, Electronic Engineering or a closely related field. These posts are available for 3 years, with a flexible starting date.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Steve Clowes, ATI Postgraduate Research Director (s.clowes@surrey.ac.uk).

The deadline for applications is 14th March 2014 and shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview between 25th March & 4th April.
