Ref npl-48057

Contract: 3 years Full time

Teddington, Middlesex

Our Quantum Detection Group is seeking a talented Fabrication Engineer for a period of 3 years.

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is one of the UK's leading science facilities and research centres. It is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available.

NPL occupies a unique position as the UK's National Measurement Institute and sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. Its expertise and original research have underpinned quality of life, innovation and competitiveness for UK citizens and business for more than a century.

Quantum technologies have significant potential to revolutionise metrology, sensing, computing and simulation. NPL has developed novel microfabricated devices for trapping atomic particles which have leading performance characteristics. Our chip-scale ion traps will be used to create quantum-engineered states of atomic systems for applications in ultra-precise quantum metrology, atomic clocks and quantum sensors; ultimately these ion microtraps will be a key enabling component in such applications. Development of next generation microtrap chips is underway and a vacancy exists for a physicist/engineer with microfabrication experience to work in this area of research.

Key duties

• Semiconductor cleanroom processing/fabrication
• Designing optical and e-beam masks
• Designing and adaptation of existing tools for improved device fabrication.
• Purchasing of specialised equipment
• Coordinating the outsourcing of micro/nano fabrication jobs to external foundry facilities.
• Conducting test and measurement of radiofrequency devices
Key skills and experience required
• A PhD would be advantageous
• An excellent problem solver with own initiative and a can-do attitude.
• Demonstrable experience in semiconductor processing in a cleanroom environment or experience in designing and fabrication of MEMs devices
• Capable to work independently, managing own workload, setting priorities and integrating with a larger scientific team
• Willingness to present your own work in national and international conferences and scientific/technical meetings.

The post is initially for three years.

Based in a unique research environment, we offer state-of-the-art offices and laboratories, a competitive salary and excellent benefits. NPL is located in pleasant surroundings on the edge of Bushy Park in South West London with a host of onsite facilities including a subsidised crèche, restaurant, and a sports and social club.
