Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland – the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multidisciplinary education and research. The university has 20 000 students and a staff of 5 000 including 370 professors.

The Department of Forest Products Technology is one of the four departments of Aalto University School of Chemical Technology. It is the leading unit in research and higher education in the forest products technologies in Europe and globally, with an average of 60 M.Sc. and 8-10 D.Sc. degrees annually. Our goal is to be a leading, globally networked and renowned centre of excellence in the field of forest products education and research. Position description

The target of the doctoral thesis work is to examine the possibility to produce papers, which are surface functionalized with pigment/cellulose nanocomposites.

In the work, a new raw material will be developed by precipitating nanoscale calcium carbonate onto nanocellulose in a recently developed reaction process. The “nanocomposite” will be applied to the surface of a fiber substrate with various technologies. The properties of the multilayer paper (especially surface properties) will be examined. The concept has a number of process and product advantages that make large scale production of several new types of products feasible. The general aim of the work will be to develop fiber products concepts that are highly differentiated from current paper and board grades.

Knowledge of product design, surface treatment technologies and cellulosic materials is desirable. Demonstrated academic excellence and innovative thinking is required.

The work will be carried out under the supervision of Thad Maloney.
