Doctoral Candidate - Aalto University, Finland

The Department of Applied Physics is presently seeking to hire a Doctoral Student at the interface between chemistry, materials science and synthetic biology at Aalto University Department of Applied Physics (Prof. Robin Ras, http://physics.aalto.fi/groups/smw/). The research project deals with synthesis of materials with programmable nanostructure using genetic methods and is funded by the Academy of Finland in the Synthetic Biology Research Programme.

The work is carried out at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus, together with the closest collaborators Prof. Sami Franssila (Department of Materials Science and Engineering) and Prof. Klas Hjort (VTT Technical Research Center of Finland). The position is closely connected to the Academy of Finland Center of Excellence on Molecular Engineering of Biosynthetic Hybrid Materials (2014-2019) headed by Academy Professor Olli Ikkala. Other major partners include the groups of Prof. Markus Linder (Biomolecular Materials), Prof. Janne Laine (Forest Products Surface Chemistry) and Prof. Merja Penttilä (VTT Biotechnology). Centres of Excellence are the flagships of Finnish research. The research group, in which the student will operate, aims at publishing in the highest-level scientific journals.

Compensation and details

Salary is based on the university salary scheme. The contract includes occupational health and social security benefits. The teaching and research personnel belongs the total working hour system (1600 working hours annually). The position is immediately available with a fixed term contract of 1-2 years, with a possible extension.

Requirements

As a successful candidate for this position, you should be highly motivated in experimental science and having a background in physics, chemistry, materials science or closely related field.
