FUNCTIONAL NANOPHASED MATERIALS


Nanocrystalline ceramic composites are a new challenging class of materials with a variety of fields of application such as: architectural materials, telescope mirrors, laser gyroscopes, radiant stovetops, fire doors, magnetic memory disc substrates, super-hard materials, zero-thermal expansion elements, light-emitting media, tunable lasers, luminescent solar concentrators, thermally-stable materials, high-modulus ceramics and so on.
We create functional nano-architectures in non-equilibrium materials and we study nanocrystals of semiconductor, metal or insulator type, embedded in the ‘parent’ matrices. The properties of these materials can be tuned ‘on demand’ by various parameters. We investigate the future applications of these ceramic nanocomposites that exploit their distinctive, ‘on-demand’ engineered properties.

nanotubes:

In fact, carbon nanotubes are so light, that you could carry a thousand of them in your pocket and not even know that they there. In addition, they’re so strong that you could shoot a bullet from an AK-47 at close range and the bullet would simply bounce back without even making a dent.

Since carbon nanotubes were discovered on accident by Sumio Iijima in 1991 during another experiment, hundreds of studies have been started and dedicated to achieving a better understanding of the structure of carbon nanotubes.

But why would science expend so much effort on understanding an element that is already being used in the production of materials for space shuttles and strengthening plants, and that is being considered for an array of other uses? Is it possible that there are still mysteries locked within the structure of carbon nanotubes that will open more doors for its use and everyday applications? The answer is: probably.
