Toxicity of Magnetic Nanoparticles

One thing I hear most is that people say that the magnetic nanoparticles wether they may be iron or nickel they are very toxic. Actually all heavy metals are toxic to biological systems. But are there any ways to decrease the toxicity of these magnetic nanoparticles.

  • Could you suggest some papers on the bio compatibility study of carbon coated magnetic nanoparticles.I have magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated by fullerenes and i am looking forward to use this for some bio applications.

  • hi
I think polymer coating could be a best option to reduce toxicity.
Recently it has been reported that more than 100microgram is required to induce some toxicity in various cell lines.
you can try dextran, peg or silane ..
